Stacey Abrams’ Story About Pressure To “Fake” A Boyfriend While Campaigning Is So Infuriating

Jessica McGowan/Getty Images News/Getty Images Stacey Abrams’ Story About Pressure To “Fake” A Boyfriend While Campaigning Is So Infuriating By Yvonne Kim 4 hours ago As with any successful, high-profile woman, Stacey Abrams knows what it can feel like to have people nitpick every little part of (what should be) your private life. A year ago, while preparing to run for her home state’s highest office, she really began to feel the pressure to conform to expectations about her personal life, including others’ opinions about her appearance, weight, and yes, relationships. Yet unfortunately, while Stacey Abrams being pressured to “fake” a boyfriend during her gubernatorial campaign is ridiculous, it’s also sadly far from surprising or uncommon. Apparently, while campaigning for …

Trump talks up special relationship with Macron, hours after threat to slap tariffs on French wine

U.S President Donald Trump sits for lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron, right, at the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, south-west France, Saturday Aug. 24, 2019. Efforts to salvage consensus among the Group of Seven rich democracies on the economy, trade and environment were fraying around the edges even as leaders were arriving before their three-day summit in southern France.  (AP) Trump’s relationship with Macron has yo-yo’d dramatically. In April last year, the relationship hit a peak when the French premier visited Washington, held hands with the man he called “cher Donald” and even had the American president brush dandruff off his shoulder. But that relationship soured, with Macron becoming increasingly critical of his American ally. After Macron suggested building …

Dear Son, Its OK to Be a Mamas Boy

ShareTweetPin My precious, precious boy. Your love for your mama knows no end. Since the beginning, you have clung to me; your safety net in this strange world. When you are sad, it is me you seek. With lips poked out and your head hung low, you pour out your tiny frustrations through broken sentences and words only I can understand. When the tears stream down your cheeks after yet another collision between your sweet head and the kitchen table, those tiny legs scurry straight to my open arms. I squeeze you tight and shower you with kisses, in the hopes that they will somehow ease your pain. Become A Contributor When you’re tired, you interlock your tiny fingers with …

With court opioid decision, Johnson & Johnson is being punished for playing by the rules

(CNN)If this week’s $572 million opioid liability verdict in Oklahoma is any indication of a trend to come, the nation’s automakers should be worried. Johnson & Johnson just got retroactively punished for the consequences of conducting its business legally according to the regulations of the time. When legal commerce generates results we don’t like, it’s worth asking who designed the marketplace, and who sets the rules. Those folks weren’t defendants in this trial. Similarly, Johnson & Johnson made drugs — Fentanyl patches and Nucynta pills — that successfully treat pain and have improved many lives. It also manufactured the base active drug sold to many other pharmaceutical companies who make riskier drugs, like oxycontin — that also brought relief, but …

Bolsonaro to deploy troops to fight Amazon rainforest fires

(CNN)Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro plans to deploy the army to tackle the wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest. “Protecting the forest is our duty, acting to combat illegal deforestation and any other criminal activities that put our Amazon at risk,” he said. Brazil’s environmental agency, IBAMA, is also hiring hundreds of temporary firefighters to help fight the fires, the agency announced on Friday. The announcement came as political, civil society leaders and celebrities around the world stepped up their pressure on the Brazilian government over the blazing rainforest. France and Ireland said they would block a trade deal between the European Union and Mercosur, the economic and political bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, unless Brazil takes action on …

New York Times: New England Patriots unlikely to make customary visit to White House

Washington (CNN)As football season heats up, the New England Patriots are increasingly unlikely to celebrate their Super Bowl victory with one of their biggest fans — President Donald Trump. Three Patriots players, though, have already said in interviews with the New York Times that they are not interested in attending a ceremony at the White House, one even suggesting he would rather meet with former President Barack Obama. The friendly relationship between the Patriots and the President has been well-documented, but at times has been bogged down by controversy. Robert Kraft, the team’s owner who has been close friends with Trump for decades, was charged in February with soliciting sex acts at a massage parlor. He has pleaded not guilty …

Can Fairphone 3 scale ethical consumer electronics?

Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise that’s on a mission to rethink the waste and exploitation that underpins the business of consumer electronics, has unboxed its third smartphone. The handset, which is sold with the promise of longevity rather than cutting edge obsolescence, goes on pre-sale from today in Europe via Fairphone’s website with a suggested retail price of €450 (depending on local taxes and levies). It will ship to buyers on September 3. Like its predecessor, the design is modular to allow the user to swap out damaged parts for replacement modules that Fairphone also sells. Out of the box the phone comes with Android 9 preloaded. A post-launch update will make it easy for buyers to wipe Google services …

Maine couple purchases infamous ‘Conjuring’ home, says it’s still haunted: ‘footsteps, knocks … lights flashing’

Cory and Jennifer Heinzen from Mexico, Maine purchased the infamous “Conjuring” home in June. (Bill Brock) The Heinzens closed on the home in late June and hoped to restore it and open it up to other paranormal enthusiasts like themselves, but the process has been anything but easy as Corey Heinzen admits “I’ve had a hard time staying there by myself.” “Footsteps, knocks, we’ve had lights flashing in rooms, and when I say lights flashing in rooms, it’s rooms that don’t have light in there to begin with,” he told KETK earlier this month. The couple said they don’t feel that the presence is evil but warn that it is similar to testimony from the Perron family, who claimed their haunting began …

Elizabeth Warren Has Spent Her Adult Life Repeating A Lie. I Want Her To Tell The Truth.

Elizabeth Warren, many advocates, were satisfied. Warren still has work to do, and demanding she do what’s left is beyond reasonable. In all of her apologizing, Warren has never let go of her family story. After spending her entire adult life repeating a lie, I simply want Warren to tell the truth.  William Marsh, enlisted himself in a Tennessee militia to fight in the “Cherokee War,” an occupation of Cherokee land in the lead-up to the Trail of Tears. Decades later, his grandson John Houston Crawford moved his family onto Indian Territory and squatted on Cherokee land in a move that, with no record of a permit, was almost certainly illegal. The John Crawford shot a Creek man for hitting …

Redaction error reveals ICE is paying Palantir $49 million

A technical error in a redacted Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contract mistakenly revealed that the federal government will pay controversial data intelligence firm Palantir $49 million over the next three years. The filing, made public Monday, was for Palantirs Investigative Case Management (ICM) software, which has become key to the agencys ability to organize raids against undocumented immigrants and build cases against them. Palantir has provided its ICM software to ICE since 2014. The total cost tallies up to an eye-watering $49,874,018.14. Advocacy group Mijente, which closely tracks ICEs connection with tech …
