Older People That Chose Not To Have Kids Reveal If They Regret The Decision Now

show that a record percentage of women don’t have kids. Recently, reddit user #2 Amy Blackstone, a gender sociologist at the University of Maine who specializes in childfree research, hopes that her work at least helps question the assumption that little boys and girls will grow up to become parents. “Right now, girls in particular, but girls and boys both, are raised to imagine themselves as parents of children,” she told Huff Post. “But if we more critically thought about the question of whether or not to parent, then everyone would have the opportunity to make the choice that’s right for them.” “Of course, the childfree would benefit… if we made it a choice rather than an assumption,” Blackstone said. …

Why AI needs more social workers, with Columbia Universitys Desmond Patton

Sometimes it does seem the entire tech industry could use someone to talk to, like a good therapist or social worker. That might sound like an insult, but I mean it mostly earnestly: I am a chaplain who has spent 15 years talking with students, faculty, and other leaders at Harvard (and more recently MIT as well), mostly nonreligious and skeptical people like me, about their struggles to figure out what it means to build a meaningful career and a satisfying life, in a world full of insecurity, instability, and divisiveness of every kind. In related news, I recently took a year-long paid sabbatical from my work at Harvard and MIT, to spend 2019-20 investigating the ethics of technology and …

Does the NRA still have power? The pro-gun group is in uncharted territory after latest mass shootings

Washington (CNN)The pressure is on the National Rifle Association from typically friendly corners — President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress — after last week’s deadly mass shootings in Ohio and Texas. But now, the NRA’s tight-knit circle is broken. Its top lobbyist, Christopher Cox, has departed. Oliver North, its well-known president and public face, has been pushed out. The NRA’s chief ad man, Angus McQueen, died last month. LaPierre, the NRA’s combative CEO, has just emerged from an attempted coup and finds himself mired in legal battles with Ackerman. This leaves LaPierre and the NRA in uncharted territory. El Paso and Dayton present them with a crucial test, and many observers — in Congress, among the NRA’s membership and …

Cops Are Offering Ring Doorbell Cameras in Exchange for Info

Rather than the cash reward used by some programs, El Monte gave out camera-equipped doorbells made by the home security company Ring, which retail starting at $99. “The Ring Home Security Camera system provides not only intelligence about suspect’s action and descriptions, but serves as a deterrent to crime,” Williams wrote, according to documents obtained in response to a public records request. Earlier that year, El Monte had entered into an official partnership with Ring, which gives officers access to an online platform where they …

Just Living Near A Gun Dealer Is A Risk Factor For Intimate Partner Homicide

Whether a person ends up being murdered by their partner could come down to the distance to the nearest gun dealer. The higher the number of dealerships in an urban county, the more people killing their spouse or lover, although the same relationship doesn’t apply in rural areas. This is for America of course – few other nations have enough gun dealerships to conduct similar analysis, and most have much lower rates of intimate partner homicide. While traumatized by the news of yet more mass shootings, it is easy to forget that the number of people killed in these events is far exceeded by shootings of family members, particularly intimate partners. It’s well established the presence of a gun in …

It Might Be Time To Cut My Right-Wing, Trump-Loving In-Laws Out Of My Kids Lives

This offensive “observation” was not a stand-alone comment. It was only the latest in a series of bigoted sound bites from my in-laws. Both in their 70s, they live on Florida’s Gulf Coast in a predominantly white, older community saturated by conservative talking points. They see themselves as tolerant, life-loving Catholics. But their tolerance extends only to people they know and understand ― and those people are white, straight, “American” people. My in-laws have always been conservative. They have always been Republican. But, before 2016, they were Catholics devoted, specifically, to the “problem” of abortion. That was the issue they cared about, and it was the issue that ignited their ballot box passion. What my husband and I have witnessed, …

Kashmir: New violence feared in old flashpoint, as Indian ruling party pushes long-held agenda

New Delhi (CNN)Hindu nationalists in India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have long dreamed of stripping Indian-controlled Kashmir — named Jammu and Kashmir state — of its decades-old special status. The “abrogation of Article 370” was also mentioned in the BJP election manifesto, released in April ahead of India’s general elections. It was part of a promise “to overcome all obstacles that come in the way of development and provide adequate financial resources to all regions of the state.” A long-held goal On Monday, Modi’s government finally moved to revoke Article 370, in what analysts say is part of a Hindu nationalist agenda. Pakistan, which also claims Kashmir, described the move as illegal. It is not clear what happens next, …
